Preface: When Resolution Increases, Storage Must Evolve
For the image creation industry, resolution continues to advance from 4K, 6K to 8K, making images more detailed, but also making materials larger and production processes more complex. These shifts are quietly pushing storage systems to a breaking point — not just in terms of speed, but in overall architecture and workflow readiness. This is not just a matter of capacity and performance, but a comprehensive challenge of "flexibility, availability, and scalability."
Recently, we planned a storage architecture with VolPack as the core for a professional image production unit, based on their actual scenario requirements, as a technical solution to face high-concurrency post-production tasks. This design has extremely high reference value and can serve as a blueprint for future image storage foundation thinking.
User Scenarios and Core Challenges
Real Needs: Speed, Capacity, Uninterrupted Creative Daily Routine
- Need to process 6 streams of 4K DPX 10-bit real-time streaming materials daily, with each stream up to 1250MB/s
- Three editing workstations simultaneously editing and color grading, with a total system bandwidth requirement exceeding 8000MB/s
- Initial storage requirement of 600TB, with an estimated monthly increase of 60TB
- The system needs to be highly available year-round and have capacity expansion capabilities and immediate response speed
Common Bottlenecks You May Have Experienced
- Traditional RAID rebuild speed is too slow, and once the system has a problem, it slows down the entire process
- All-SSD architecture is fast but too costly and not easily expandable
- Data migration relies too much on manual work, lacking flexibility and controllability
- Cold data needs to be retained but occasionally needs to be quickly accessed
When editors are waiting for materials to load, creativity may have already been interrupted. This is when the storage system should "better understand the on-site rhythm."
VolPack Architecture Proposal Overview: Speed, Logic, and Flexibility
Hardware Architecture Configuration Table:
| Module | Model and Configuration |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | VolPack ACS1012-FC + 12x 7.68TB SSD (92TB cache layer) |
| Tier 2 | 2x ACS1012-E + 24x 24TB HDD (576TB capacity layer) |
| Connection Method | Through macOS Xsan architecture, via 32Gb Fibre Channel direct connection to up to 64 Mac Pro editing stations |
| Controller Type | Dual controller architecture, with load balancing and high availability |
This is a systematic solution designed based on data traffic, creative rhythm, and future scalability.
Inside VolPack's Smart Storage Engine: From Passive Support to Active Empowerment: Storage Redefines Workflow
1. AEC: From Hardware Fault Tolerance to Data Resilience
VolPack's Advanced Erasure Coding (AEC) technology is not just an extension of RAID, but a restructuring of storage logic:
- Data is accelerated through parallel encoding and decoding, speeding up rebuilds and reducing interruptions
- Multi-copy fault tolerance design allows continued operation even if multiple hard drives fail
- Flexibly expandable, adding different types or capacities of disks without rebuilding the entire array
In this design, VolPack stably supports three editing machines, 6 streams of 4K real-time flow, over 8000MB/s continuous throughput, with no risk of interruption even if an SSD is damaged. AEC not only protects data but turns the storage system into a reliable partner in the creative process.
2. Auto Tiering: Automatic Mastery of Data Heat, Smarter Space Allocation
Material data changes every day—yesterday's hot data may become cold today. VolPack's built-in Auto Tiering system is born for this dynamic rhythm:
- Automatically adjusts data location between SSD and HDD based on access frequency
- Recalculates daily, requires no manual operation, and does not interfere with the editing process
- Reserves speed for tasks that need it, and space for longer-term preservation
In this project planning, we preset materials to go to SSD, historical projects to HDD, with layering strategies automatically completed. Editors feel no difference, but the system is always making the most efficient arrangements.
3. Thin Provisioning: No Hoarding, No Reservation, Right-Sized, On-Demand Allocation
Traditional storage planning often "configures too much, uses too little," resulting in idle resources and budget waste. The Thin Provisioning technology supported by VolPack brings a more precise usage model:
- Space allocated according to actual usage, only 600TB deployed initially
- Can be flexibly expanded later without interruption or rebuilding
- High space utilization, easier management of lifespan and performance
This transforms storage from a "static resource" to an "adjustable strategic asset," both flexible and manageable.
VolPack, Not Just a Device, But a Storage Solution
As data volume continues to explode and work rhythms become increasingly tight, storage architecture cannot just passively support; it must know how to adapt to changes and even anticipate them.
VolPack is our response to this problem. It's not just a device, but a kind of overall architectural design language.
Now, you can start thinking:
- Can your current storage architecture support content growth over the next two years?
- When editing software upgrades, material formats update, and simultaneous projects increase, can your system still handle it?
- Is your storage strategy simply "space management" or comprehensive "digital asset management"?
